When the garage door had closed, I slipped out of the truck, gathered my gear, and headed for the door to the house. Jasper as he normally did, whenever we were together, took the point and sniffed the door. Satisfied that all was clear, he sat down, looked back at me, then back at the door handle. It was his way to tell me it was okay to enter, and one that he had developed himself.

As I slipped the key into the door, I thought back to our first tour together in Afghanistan. Twice Jasper had saved my bacon by alerting me to danger behind a closed door I had not detected. It didn't take me long to figure out how he had detected the danger. Jasper was using his amazing sense of smell to detect something that was out of place based on the normal smells for the area we were about to enter.

Jasper's initial training had been for the detection of IED's, but I quickly learned that he had also learned to detect the smell of gun oil, along with the smell of burnt gunpowder. It took me a bit longer to realize that Jasper was able to discern many different smells, even to the point of being able to smell the aroma of foods present that were not normal for the area. Somewhere in his amazing brain he was able to assign an aroma with a region where we had been. Even more amazing, was his memory of whether he considered the region safe or dangerous.

That trait he had used to save my life, one more time, just a few months back. He had detected an intruder by their smell, and had come to my on-suite, where I was taking a shower, to alert me. He subdued the intruder, with the help of his then new friend Street-Fighter, as the person had started to enter my bedroom with his weapon extended and ready to fire.

Tonight, the house was as it should be, just as Jasper had told me it would be. I knew both Jasper and Street-Fighter needed some run around time, so I flipped on the light for the patio and let them both loose through the sliding glass door. I grabbed a diet coke and headed for my office to download the images I had recorded. As I did, I began to wonder where the pack rats had found the bags of diamonds originally.

I knew from my research that the rats normally had a number of hiding places and often moved items from one spot to another, which is why the diamonds had been found with the body. The other bag that was empty, we had found in the field. I now felt they had simply dropped it, either to take something they liked better, or they felt threatened by a predator and dropped it so they could move faster.

I got up and let the boys in, and just as I got back to my office, my landline began to ring.
